All I was doing back in 2005 was looking for a book on Amazon, honest!I’d just finished writing MasterList Professional, a Windows personal taskmanager, of which I planned to sell a million copies so that I could retireforever from my contract programming job. Istarted spending more and more time talking with the kind of people Iliked, comoderating a forum on the business of software, conducting interviewsfor a podcast, and then working for actual money with startups andmicroISVs (self-funded startups). Then I wrote another book (on blogging),followed by two e-books, and then created a new podcast (this timemy own, The Startup Success Podcast, with the able help of my cohost,Pat Foley).I like startups. Startup founders have a dream, a passion, a desire tomake something happen, not just to do what others have done. But bymid-2007 I had come to realize three things. First, there had to be a betterway to bootstrap a software business than either to hire someone expensivelike myself or to flail at it week after week. The Web Startup Success Guide is kind of theKill Bill Vol. II of what it takes to create a successful startup. I have writtenit for all those developers who are ready to step up and create more thanjust an alternative to programming for money for someone else. There’s awhole other story now to be explored and told, one being written by tensof thousands of developers on the Web, on mobile and social platforms,even on desktops. Right now it’s a story unfolding in front of a backdropof global economic disruption, which paradoxically makes it a great timefor startups—disruption creates opportunity, engenders new needs, andchanges old ideas.I think this book turned out very well, thanks to the several hundredpeople who were kind enough to answer my questions, correct my assumptions,and share their experience. I appreciate the opportunity to update and expand TheEncyclopedia of Serial Killers. Much has happened inthe field since I completed the original work in early1999, as evidenced by the increased volume of casesreported. The first edition included data on 1,621 specificserial murder cases; this edition contains 2,309 (anet increase of 42 percent in the span of five years). Notall of those cases and killers are “new,” however, sinceexpanded study of serial crime has shed light on manyolder cases that were unrecognized or poorly reportedwhen the first edition went to press. Accordingly, whilethe previous edition dated records of the first knownserial killer from the first century A.D., we now knowthat compulsive predators were active in ancient Romeas early as 331 B.C. In time, older cases will no doubtemerge.With so much new material from which to choose, avolume many times the size of the original might easilyhave been prepared. Instead, as in the first edition, FactsOn File has placed a premium on user-friendly formatand economy. The new edition differs from its predecessorin three ways: (1) New entries and updated informationhave been added throughout the main text,while revisions and corrections have been undertakenbased on new research and sources; (2) 689 cases havebeen added to the work’s appendixes on solo killers,team killers, and unsolved crimes, while certain errorsin the supplementary material have also been corrected;(3) The bibliography has been extensively updated, listing686 English-language sources (compared to 276 inthe first edition). In short, the revised Encyclopedia ofSerial Killers represents the most complete source onthe subject presently available.Thanks are due to various individuals who providedsupplementary material for this volume and/or suggestedcorrections from the first edition.
